Services

Many people experience tinnitus or sound sensitivity, and with the right assessment and support, they can return to the activities they love, learning, and sleeping peacefully. We look forward to meeting you and your child and helping them hear the world in a way that feels safe and comfortable.

Tinnitus

We all occasionally hear sounds that aren't coming from our environment, but for some of us, sounds such as ringing or buzzing can significantly impact our lives. Around 3% of children have very bothersome tinnitus and experience difficulties with concentration, sleep, and school performance. Young children will often describe what they hear as bees or other bugs or beeps. At One Another Audiology, children through young adults receive a detailed tinnitus evaluation for accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment tailored to their needs.

Sound Sensitivity

Sound sensitivity describes an increased or atypical reaction to everyday sounds that most people find normal or tolerable. This term along with decreased sound tolerance, often refer to misophonia and hyperacusis.

Hyperacusis

For a person with hyperacusis, some sounds are unusually loud or physically uncomfortable. Hyperacusis occurs at any age and can affect school, work, sleep, and social activities. Early intervention is particularly important when dealing with hyperacusis.

Misophonia

With misophonia, hearing specific sounds (most often oral or nasal sounds like chewing or sniffing) results in extreme emotions such as anger, disgust, or overwhelm. More than a dislike or annoyance, the reaction is involuntary and immediate and can have a significant impact on the individual's concentration, sleep, mood, relationships and school performance. Our goal is to understand exactly what’s happening, rule out any cause that needs treatment, and create a plan that lets your child enjoy everyday life again.

What to Expect During the First Appointment

Check-in:  For online appointments, you'll follow a link to let us know you're ready in our virtual waiting room.

Welcome & History:  Our audiologist will talk with you and your child, ask about what they're experiencing, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it’s affecting their daily life (school, sleep, mealtimes, etc.).

Hearing Tests:  If your child has had a recent hearing test, we'll go over those results together. If not, we can arrange for you to receive our test kit prior to the appointment. We'll guide you through each step so we can look in your child's ear, check their hearing acuity including high frequencies, and gently assess what sound levels your child can tolerate.

Questionnaires:  We use clinical questionnaires to help with diagnosis and monitoring and sometimes to screen for related conditions so we can help make sure your child gets the support they need.

Discussion and Next Steps:  We share what we found and talk about the best ways to help your child. We give you handouts and a list of resources, and the summary of the evaluation will be available in your patient portal. We provide school notes and letters for accommodation requests as needed.

The first visit usually lasts 60-90 minutes.
